We open doors for a living. That is exactly why we check, every time, that the person in front of the door is allowed through it.
Why it matters
Anyone can phone a locksmith and say "I live here". Most people who say it are telling the truth. A few are not: a former partner, an evicted tenant, a person who wants into someone else's home. We can't tell the difference by looking.
So we check everyone the same way. It may feel slow when you are tired and cold. It is also the reason nobody else can call us to your door and walk in.
What we ask to see
Two things: who you are, and that you live at the address.
Who you are. Any photo ID works:
- a passport, from any country
- a Swedish ID card or driving licence
- a residence permit card
- a national ID card from your home country
That you live there. This is where newcomers often worry. You don't need a Swedish personnummer (the personal identity number Swedes use for almost everything). Things that help:
- your name on the door or the letterbox
- post addressed to you at that address
- a rental contract or sublet agreement, also on your phone
- a bank app, insurance letter or employer letter showing the address
- a neighbour who knows you
We judge it on site. One strong piece of proof can be enough. If something doesn't add up, we ask more questions.
If your ID is inside
Very common. You are locked out, and your wallet is on the hall table. In that case we open the door and check your ID right inside the door, before you go further into the home. If the ID doesn't match, we close up again.
If you are a guest or a subletter
Staying with a friend? Renting a room? Many people in Stockholm live on a sublet ("andrahandskontrakt"). Show what you have: the sublet contract, messages with the person you rent from, or that person on the phone. If you are a short-term guest, we may need to reach the person who lives there.
What we won't do
We won't open a door for someone who can't show they have the right to be there. We won't open a home to let someone collect belongings in a dispute. And we won't change a lock to shut out someone who also lives in the home. If you feel unsafe at home, call 112.
These rules protect you too. If you ever call a locksmith who doesn't ask for ID, be careful.
